Translation: The Ultimate Way in the World
The way of the great learning lies in establishing a clear moral standard, being close to the common people, and striving for the ultimate good. Only when one knows when to stop can one achieve consistency. And only when one is consistent can one be calm, and only when one is calm can one be at ease. It is only after being at ease that one can plan ahead, and it is only after careful planning that one can succeed.
Translation: The Self-Cultivation of the Nobleman
The nobleman concentrates his learning, seeks clarification through questioning, tolerates others, and practices benevolence. When one pursues these values, one can succeed. However, if one loses focus on these values, the proper path will be difficult to follow. This is the way of Confucius, which emphasizes loyalty and forgiveness.
Translation: Self-Cultivation, Family Harmony, Governmental Order, and World Peace
When one is morally upright, one can command without having to give orders; however, if one's morals fall short, one's authority means nothing. Therefore, a nobleman always starts by cultivating their character. If one sets one's own family in order, then one's personal character will be refined as well. When one's family is in order, one can govern the state properly. When one has successfully governed a state, then peace will prevail in the world. This principle applies to all members of society, from the emperor to the common people. All must cultivate themselves first and foremost.
